Funding opportunities for further training

In Germany, there are a variety of funding opportunities for further training offered by the federal government, the federal states, the European Union and various other institutions. These subsidies aim to support professional development and retraining in order to expand the expertise of the workforce and improve their employability. Here are some of the most important funding programs:

  • Aufstiegs-BAföG (formerly Meister-BAföG): Supports skilled workers with further training in technical, craft or service-oriented professions. It includes grants and low-interest loans for courses and examinations that lead to a publicly regulated further training qualification.

  • Education voucher from the Federal Employment Agency: This voucher is intended for jobseekers or people threatened by unemployment. It covers the costs of specific further training measures that improve your chances on the job market.

  • Further training bonus:As part of the "Further training for low-skilled and employed older workers in companies" program, participants who successfully complete certain further training courses can receive a bonus.

  • Qualification Opportunities Act: Aimed at employees whose jobs are affected by technological change or who wish to gain further qualifications in order to maintain their employability. The Act provides for the costs of further training to be partially or fully covered.

  • Support for talented young people in vocational training: For particularly talented young professionals under the age of 25 who have completed vocational training and would like to gain further qualifications. The program offers financial support for non-academic further training.

  • Education bonus: Offers a premium voucher that covers half of the further education costs (up to a maximum of 500 euros). The target group are employed persons with a taxable income of up to 20,000 euros (or 40,000 euros for jointly assessed persons).

  • ESF funding programs: The European Social Fund (ESF) supports various regional and nationwide programs for continuing vocational training, particularly for people who would otherwise be disadvantaged in the labor market.

  • Vocational Training Service of the Bundeswehr: Supports former servicemen and women in continuing their vocational training in civilian jobs after completing their service.

The availability and specific conditions of these funding opportunities may vary depending on the individual situation, the type of further training and the federal state. It is advisable to enquire about the respective requirements and application procedures directly with the relevant authorities.
