ITSM Simulation MarsLander - a simulation for ITIL 4
Experience how agile service management is applied in practice - with a simulated Mars landing! MarsLander is a practical, interactive and exciting service management simulation. In this exciting mission, your team takes over the work of the Mission Control Center.
Together, you have to get a rocket safely to Mars to collect scientific data. Different events and a constantly changing environment require you to align your service processes in an agile manner. This is the only way to enable optimal problem solving, course adjustments and forward-looking corrections to your mission. Thanks to the constantly changing requirements of your mission, you will gain sound practical insights into service management in just one day.
From the moon landing to the Mars mission: a new era of service management
In the 20th century, we used ITIL® as the basis for managing our services so that the Apollo 13 mission safely reached the moon and returned to earth. A milestone in the history of space travel! But the journey to Mars presents us with a whole new dimension of challenges - it requires an unimaginable evolution of our service delivery capabilities.
The complexity of a Mars mission
A Mars lander on the Red Planet? Never before has such a complex mission been realized. The systems are revolutionary and packed with software - much more than was the case with Apollo. At the same time, we have to be able to cope with unforeseen events at lightning speed. Conventional service management is not enough here.
Focus on agility and lean
The service world of the Mars mission requires agility: different teams have to work together seamlessly to perfectly coordinate software, hardware and services. Changes and new requirements are coming faster than ever - we not only have to implement them quickly, but also securely. Traditional ITSM remains important, but it must adapt to dynamic requirements: Agile service management is becoming the driving force.
But what does that mean in concrete terms?
Learning in orbit: Flexibility is crucial
A malfunction in space cannot be rectified by a technician on site. We are working in uncharted territory, learning from every step we take and continuously adapting. Small, flexible improvements ensure that our services remain precisely tailored to the customer's needs.
At the same time, we rely on an interlinked ecosystem of partners and suppliers. Everyone involved must be flexible, coordinate with each other and be able to react to new requirements in real time.
Sharing knowledge, breaking down silos
The key lies in multifunctional teams: knowledge is shared, handovers are minimized and misunderstandings are prevented. Every decision, every action is aimed at meeting the customer's requirements in the best possible way - while we constantly increase the flow of work.
The Mars mission challenges us to rethink service management - faster, smarter and more flexible. And this is exactly where the future lies: a world in which we are ready for the biggest challenges and continuously learn and grow in the process.

Future missions, e.g. through programs such as NASA's Artemis or SpaceX's Mars colony plans, aim to bring humans safely to Mars. The planet is seen as a potential long-term destination for human presence and exploration.
The scenario: Together to the red planet

Your team's mission is clearly defined: Successfully launch a rocket with the MarsLander on board, bring it safely to Mars and collect valuable data for universities and research centers.
A galactic challenge
Your task is to support the Mission Center and ensure that all mission objectives are achieved.
At the heart of the mission is the Mission Director, who heads the Mission Center. He leads an expert team of specialists for flight operations, navigation and communication. These teams coordinate the mission's flight plan and ensure that all mission objectives are achieved and contractual agreements with customers and suppliers are adhered to.
The teams behind the success
- The Mission Support Team
The Support Engineers, Test Engineers and Change Management are on hand to solve any problems that arise during the mission. They are the backbone for a smooth process. - The Development Team
This team develops and maintains the applications, functions and bug fixes required for the mission. Their work ensures that everything works smoothly on the ground and in space. - The suppliers
The project partners provide essential services such as data communication and data storage. They are a central component of the entire mission ecosystem. - The Service Manager
The Service Manager is responsible for the design, provision and continuous improvement of services. They ensure that everything is optimally coordinated and that the mission remains successful.
Collaboration for a new era
Every cogwheel meshes, every team plays a key role. Together, we ensure that the mission is not only a technical masterpiece, but also an organizational one - and bring humanity one big step closer to the stars.
