Why PRINCE2® as a project management method?

Companies are confronted with ever-increasing external pressure. Due to changing market conditions, strategies or global megatrends, a fast pace is created which is difficult to handle in this form. In order to meet these demands, the focus is on coordinating plans in the form of projects. This means that the existing structures and processes of the organization must be integrated into the methodological framework of project management. This makes it complex to implement project management in the company, because there are a large number of important components that need to be taken into account.

It is advisable to look for a methodology that offers a certain degree of flexibility in terms of integration and design in order to meet other factors such as the trend towards agility. But how can agile working and prevailing structures be combined with the defined procedures of project management? The answer is clear: You use a flexible methodology. You use PRINCE2.

Structure of PRINCE2

The PRINCE2 framework is made up of four integrated components. At its core are seven processes surrounded by seven themes. In addition, there are the seven basic principles and the respective project environment. These components enable a comprehensive view of the project circumstances and a structured project process.

The division into components also gives some flexibility, because the methodology does not describe in its components the execution of the activities, but rather the "What is to be done?" and thus already gives a lot of freedom for the execution of work within an organization.

The seven topics in PRINCE2 cover the knowledge areas relevant to project management. In this way, the topics underpin the activities carried out by the project manager and provide him with the appropriate tools to be able to develop adequate and valid information in the process steps. The seven themes are an essential building block of the PRINCE2 process model. The scope of their application varies depending on the type and environment of the project. An essential factor here is that all topics are also used in smaller projects to ensure a holistic view.

The seven basic principles provide the project framework and are therefore mandatory for every project managed according to the framework. If certain basic principles are not taken into account, the project cannot be classified as a PRINCE2 project. The seven basic principles are generally valid and universal. Thus, they can be applied to any project, which is proven in practice. A very interesting and charming basic principle of PRINCE2 ensures that the respective project environment is always considered and included: Adaptation to the project.

Adaptation to the project with PRINCE2

PRINCE2's basic principle of "adapting to the project" ensures that there is always alignment with the project environment. This enables the user of the methodology to adapt to organizational standards and find an acceptable way to manage the project. In addition, this forces the universality of the methodology for any project context. Through adaptations, PRINCE2 can be applied to any project in any environment and has an answer to all external influences such as organizational standards or agility efforts.

What does it mean?

To answer the initial question "Why PRINCE2?": because the methodology offers us enormous degrees of freedom for the design of project management in the organization. It is maximally adaptive. Unfortunately, adapting to the project can sometimes be difficult and very complex. In addition, there is potential for optimization almost everywhere, which must be identified and exploited. For this purpose, it often makes sense to include an external perspective. So don't hesitate and arrange a non-binding consultation appointment with us.
