PRINCE2 Agile Version 2: What's new - and what remains?

Graphic PRINCE2 Agile Version 2 - What's new and what remains?

PRINCE2 Agile combines two strong approaches: the structured project governance of PRINCE2 with the flexibility of agile working methods. The aim is to manage projects in a controlled yet adaptable manner, especially in dynamic environments.

Since the introduction of the first version in 2015, not only has the project world evolved, but also the underlying framework. With PRINCE2 Agile Version 2, the interplay between governance and agility has been comprehensively modernized - with clear benefits for organizations and project managers.

Why was PRINCE2 Agile developed further?

The second version of PRINCE2 Agile is based on the new PRINCE2 7 standard, which was published in 2023. It takes into account current practical requirements, new agile trends and the increasing importance of leadership and corporate culture.

The further development pursues a central goal: greater practical relevance, better scalability and stronger integration of agile principles into the management approach of projects.

The most important innovations in PRINCE2 Agile Version 2

1. alignment with PRINCE2 7

The biggest change: PRINCE2 Agile Version 2 is based entirely on the modernized PRINCE2 7 - including new principles, roles and structures. These include, for example, an increased focus on people and a clearer separation of project and product.

2. focus on mindset and culture

Agility is not just a method, but an attitude. Version 2 places particular emphasis on the agile mindset, the role of corporate culture and the importance of team responsibility.

3. agile leadership

A new chapter is dedicated to the topic of agile leadership: How do you lead teams in an agile way - without losing control? What qualities are crucial for managers today? These questions are answered systematically.

4. performance measurement in agile environments

PRINCE2 Agile Version 2 now provides concrete approaches on how to measure and manage performance in agile projects - without losing focus on results orientation.

5. tailoring & scaling

The section on adapting to different project sizes and organizational contexts has been extensively revised. The new version offers more guidance for scaling and tailoring, including practical recommendations.

6. improved structure and language

The language has been made clearer, easier to understand and more inclusive. The new structure makes it easier to read and quicker to access - for both beginners and experienced users.

7. more practical examples

PRINCE2 Agile Version 2 contains significantly more practical examples and scenarios to make it easier to transfer theory to everyday project work.

What remains the same?

Despite many innovations, the core approach of PRINCE2 Agile remains the same:

  • Combining governance and agilityPRINCE2 controls, agile methods provide flexibility.

  • Certification structureThe certification levels (Foundation & Practitioner) remain unchanged.

  • Tool neutrality: No specific agile framework is preferred in version 2 either - Scrum Scrum, Kanban or SAFe can still be integrated.
