AI & responsibility: How ISO 42001 prepares companies

Artificial intelligence is changing business models, processes and decisions. It increases efficiency, opens up new opportunities and at the same time brings with it new challenges. Because where AI makes decisions independently, companies have to take responsibility. For data protection, traceability, ethics - and security.

The new international standard ISO/IEC 42001 starts right here. For the first time, it offers organizations a structured framework for the responsible use of AI systems. In this article, you will find out how the standard works, what benefits it creates and why now is the time to get to grips with it.

Responsibility begins with planning

AI systems operate on the basis of complex algorithms, often trained with large amounts of data. Unlike traditional IT systems, their decision-making processes are not always transparent. This is precisely what makes them so powerful - and at the same time so challenging.

Companies need to ask themselves:

  • Who is responsible for AI-supported decisions?

  • How can discrimination or misconduct be avoided?

  • How do you maintain control over systems that learn and adapt?

The answers to this do not start with technology, but with a structured management approach.

ISO/IEC 42001: A management system for trustworthy AI

ISO/IEC 42001 is the world's first standard to describe an AI management system (AIMS). It is aimed at organizations of all sizes that use, develop or are responsible for AI - and want to act ethically, securely and transparently.

The standard contains requirements on the following topics, among others:

  • Establishment of clear governance structures

  • Carrying out risk analyses for AI systems

  • Ensuring transparency, fairness and traceability

  • Compliance with legal and ethical requirements

  • Integration of AI guidelines into existing management systems (e.g. ISO/IEC 27001)

The aim is to create trust - among users, partners and within the organization.

Structures instead of uncertainty

Precisely because AI is complex, it needs a clear framework. ISO/IEC 42001 helps companies to establish suitable processes and responsibilities. These include, for example:

  • Definition of roles and responsibilities for AI projects

  • Regular evaluation and monitoring of systems in use

  • Training employees in dealing with AI

  • Documentation and verification vis-à-vis third parties

This makes the use of AI plannable, controllable and compatible with existing structures in the company.

Why companies should act now

The use of AI has long been a reality - as have growing regulatory requirements. The EU's AI Act and other international regulations are creating a legal framework that obliges companies to use AI responsibly.

Those who create structures now are not just acting out of a sense of duty. They are also creating competitive advantages:

  • Strengthening trust with customers and partners

  • Early preparation for audits and certifications

  • Minimization of legal and reputational risks

  • Integrating ethical principles into the digital strategy

ISO/IEC 42001 provides the right basis for this - regardless of whether companies develop AI or "only" use it.
